The tides go in or out, FIVE+ feet every hour!
For my entire life I have watched the tides roll in and out of the Bay of Fundy. I must admit I take it for granted and chuckle when our guests, excitedly ask if the tide is going in or out. I always say the same thing.... "is the beach wet or dry?"
When I stop to think about it though, it's pretty amazing that our little village is part of the Fundy Biosphere and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
St. Martins Harbour, home of the World's Highest Tides.
"Tides Out"
Why are the tides so high?
The question I hear most is, "why are the tides so high?" It is a bit confusing but, imagine this... a kid on a swing, going back and forth, reaching the same height every time. Now imagine someone giving the kid on the swing a solid push every time the swing Is on the verge of propelling forward again. That kid is obviously going to go much higher this time.
Well, the tides coming in from the Atlantic Ocean are like the person giving the push and the water in the Bay of Fundy is the kid on the swing.
One of New Brunswick's many unique geological features creates a trifecta of natural occurrences which together, produce our incredible tides which rise and fall over 38 feet, twice a day.
1. The Bay of Fundy is shaped like a large natural funnel; it becomes narrower and shallower towards the upper part of the bay, forcing the water higher up onto the shores.
2. The Bay of Fundy naturally oscillates, or swings, back and forth, (the swing) and...
3....just so happens to do so in perfect sync with the tides of the Atlantic Ocean every 12 hours and 26 minutes. (That push of the swing)
Did you know?
"The water from every river on earth, that flows into all the oceans, is equal to the amount of water flowing in and out of the Bay of Fundy in a single day."
